The RSVP Rating System

Ratings for Sex, Violence & Profanity

Many people are tired of and frustrated by the current movie rating system (G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17).  They don’t believe it tells them what to expect in the way of content related to sex, violence or profanity.  A 12-year old girl burned a CD using a computer at her elementary school and it had language on it that would make a sailor blush.  We are seeing (and hearing) things on TV that, while they might not make a sailor blush, are not the kinds of things many people want their children watching or hearing.  So, a new rating system is herewith proposed – and it applies to CDs, radio shows and TV shows as well as movies. 

 The RSVP Rating System^TM is simple enough.  It rates three categories of content: Sex, Violence and Profanity.  The rating scale addresses amount (how much) and nature (how bad) as follows and applies to all three categories:

 The ratings are presented in SVP order, preceded by the letters RSVP (which represent Rating for Sex, Violence and Profanity).  To illustrate, a movie with no sexual content, very little violence and moderate profanity would receive an RSVP rating of 013.  A CD with lyrics advocating murder and rape and incessantly using the F and mother-F words would receive an RSVP rating of 666.  A movie with no sex, violence or profanity would receive an RSVP rating of 000.

The rating scales for the nature of the content are tentatively and illustratively defined as follows:
